Ruffstar started with Nyla.
She's my German Shepherd – Lab mix. She was found in a forest with her littermates beside their mother, who passed after an encounter with a porcupine. Nyla taught me what patient, consistent work with an animal looks like, and what a dog can become when someone puts in the work. Every dog at Ruffstar gets the same star treatment.
I spent three years working in dog daycare before deciding to build something different: a home where dogs can live more naturally — together, socially, and as part of a stable group.
Everything we do is centred around enrichment, socialisation, and care shaped around each individual dog. They have space to play, rest, build relationships, and simply be dogs.
Not every dog is the right fit, and that’s by design. The safe, calm environment our dogs thrive in depends on a careful and selective intake process.
